History of the Women’s Symposium

The Women’s Symposium began the first Saturday of August 1984. A group of women, including Harriet and Susan G., decided that a time was needed where women could gather and spend a day celebrating sobriety together. The excitement was contagious, and a committee was formed. Harriet was the first chairperson. Speakers, small discussion groups and a raffle were added to the program. Plenty of time for fellowship with lots of food including a continental breakfast and catered lunch helped make the day a special occasion. The most important part of the day was nourishing and supporting each other’s souls as women. In the early days, Marguerite was always enthusiastically encouraging and inspiring the women involved in the planning. In the past 39 years, the symposium has evolved to become a place where newcomers and old timers alike connect and share the experience, strength and hope of Alcoholics Anonymous.
